First-Year Orientation Dates

As a first-year student, you're required to start your Carnegie Mellon University experience at the First-Year Orientation program. First-Year Orientation is a dynamic and engaging program that introduces new students to each other and to the culture and traditions of Carnegie Mellon. Over 250 upperclass student leaders help plan and facilitate the program to ensure it’s a memorable and fun week and a great introduction to university life.

Schedule Overview

The full orientation schedule will be available on the Events at Carnegie Mellon University app (download via the App Store or Google Play) in early August 2020. In the meantime, you can check out a daily overview of the schedule.

Move-In Day: Saturday, August 22, 2020

Incoming students will receive detailed instructions and an assigned move-in time in the summer. Students are not permitted to move in early to the residence halls unless they're approved through a summer program or athletics.

Family Orientation: Sunday, August 23, 2020

Invite your parents and family members to join you as you learn about resources and support at Carnegie Mellon. Family Orientation includes the President’s Welcome, individual college events, a resource fair and breakout sessions. Parents and family members will depart campus by Sunday evening.

First-Year Orientation: Sunday, August 23 - Sunday, August 30, 2020

Programming from August 23-30 is for new students. Our weeklong Orientation program introduces students to their academic program, house community, campus resources, expectations and opportunities for leadership, service and involvement. The activities help new students make meaningful connections with other first-year students, upperclass student mentors and faculty and staff.

International Students:

International students will move in to the residence halls on Saturday, August 22, 2020. International students must attend a mandatory immigration check-in on Sunday, August 23, 2020. The Office of International Education (OIE) will provide additional details about this session directly to international students and their families in the coming months.

Transfer & Commuter Students:

We’re excited to welcome transfer students to Carnegie Mellon and to Orientation. You’re expected to move into your residence hall on Saturday, August 22; if you’ll be a commuter student, join us at the Transfer Reception, which will take place on Sunday, August 23. All transfer students will be assigned to an Orientation group.

Student Athletes:

Student athletes are expected to participate in all Orientation programs as their practice schedule allows. Practice schedules are designed in coordination with Orientation so students are able to attend house-based and academic programs during the week. We're also offering a special Orientation program for first-year varsity football players on August 19, 2020. More information about this program will be sent to players in the summer.

First Day of Classes: Monday, August 31, 2020

Family Weekend: Friday, October 9 - Sunday, October 11, 2020

Even after the summer, students, families and friends can stay connected during this weekend event. You can view the Family Weekend page for more information.

For questions, please email the First-Year Orientation office or call 412-268-4886.
