The Institute for Politics and Strategy's students and faculty shape the future of international politics. 

The Institute for Politics and Strategy (IPS) offers students the opportunity to leverage the Dietrich College’s strengths in analytical research methods with access to leading experts in policy and international relations. Through these efforts, students gain an in-depth understanding of domestic and international political strategy.

Washington Semester Program 

Undergraduates from any course of study at Carnegie Mellon desiring first-hand policy experience are invited to apply to Washington Semester Program. In this semester-long program, students live, work and study in Washington, D.C. Students have the oppourtunity to come into direct contact with political, business and community leaders, and to learn about the most pressing policy issues of the day. 

Meet Kiron Skinner

Kiron Skinner, Director of the Institute for Politics and Strategy, has been a Carnegie Mellon faculty member since 1999 and is a leading expert in international relations, U.S. foreign policy and political strategy. She currently serves as the Director of Policy Planning at the United States Department of State, is on the Chief of Naval Operations Executive Panel, is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford. From 2001-2007, she was a member of the U.S. Defense Department’s Defense Policy Board as an adviser on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
